How Leitrim compares with the other councils

Leitrim grants more often than most councils. It ranks 3rd of 30 on the share of applications granted, 4 points above the median council (90%). A typical decision comes faster than at the median council: 53 days against 55. Nine in ten decisions came within 209 days, the same as at the median council.

The register records a request for further information on 38% of all the decisions it records, in line with the median council (39%). The register flags only 3 of Leitrim's decisions as one-off houses, too few to compare with other applications.

Applications are up. Leitrim received 258 in 2025, 17% more than the 220 of 2019. 2025 was the busiest full year in the register since 2019.

What Leitrim reported for 2025

Leitrim has the smallest return of all: 173 in its category counts, with 131 dwellings and 15 applications each for commercial premises and farm buildings. Industrial, public and social-use buildings come to 4 each. It also reported the fewest refusals, 4 in total, split between houses (2) and commercial premises (2). The council ruled 93 applications invalid, and 135 were decided within 8 weeks, the lowest such figure, in line with its size. Civil engineering and other functional categories are at zero. The register shows the same scale: 228 Leitrim decisions in the 12 months, the fewest of the 30 councils with decisions in the register. With so few decisions, each single refusal moves Leitrim's share granted by about 0.4 percentage points. Not one application was refused in the farm, industrial, public or social-use lines.

These figures come from each council's annual return to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage: applications received in 2025, decisions to refuse and other measures, published under a CC BY-SA 4.0 licence. An application that fits several categories is counted in each, so the categories do not add up to a number of applications, and the Department notes that councils may have read its guidance in slightly different ways.
